Well Dressing Report 2008
ANNUAL WELL DRESSING IS A GREAT SUCCESS!
At the 29th Newborough Well Dressing which took place on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May, visitors enjoyed a number of new attractions including an Italian market, a motorcycle and trike display and a traditional children's funfair. With visitor numbers topping the thousand mark and an afternoon of glorious sunshine, the event was judged to be a resounding success. Iain Marr, chair of the Newborough Well Dressing Committee said, "We have received very positive feedback on the new initiatives introduced this year. The Italian market was very popular and it was great to welcome so many visitors to the village. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the event such an enormous success and all those who supported us."
This year’s Well Dressing had a Shakespearian theme, with the well boards featuring Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet. The well boards were blessed following the family church service by Reverend Timothy Fox and Reverend Alex Mann. The church service focused on water and environmental issues.
This year’s May Queen was Amy Kearns, age 10, Hoar Cross and her princesses were Lucia Wright, Bethany Wright and Annabel Hardwick all age 10 from Newborough and Lizzie Hendon, age 10, from Hanbury.
The afternoon was packed with a host of activities and fun attractions for all the family to enjoy including The Needwood School Maypole Dancers, the Uttoxeter Heart of Oak Morris Men, the Uttoxeter Town Brass Band, a Tug of War, a Village Produce Show and Flower Festival. Craft stalls, bouncy castles and games were on the school field all day.
As well as staging a fun event for all to enjoy, the Well Dressing also raises a substantial amount for good causes. This year’s Well Dressing supported the Newborough Village Community Hall Project.
